November 2012
I attended the Asia European Foundation Seminar on ‘Sustainable Development Assessment: Towards Measurable Goals’ will take place at ASEF in Singapore (21-22 November 2012). Attending was over 50 representatives from international organisations, environmental think-tanks and business representatives from ASEM countries.
The principle objective of the seminar was to initiate a three-year-programme (2013-2015), which will empower countries’ leadership towards a bottom-up approach. This will help in creating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on a national and regional level. The programme will directly target policy makers, non-governmental organisations, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and other relevant organisations including the UN agencies.
I had the pleasure of then spending a week in Melbourne Australia with Futureye and its dynamic leader Katherine Teh-White. It was fun going to the other Melbourne having gone to school in Melbourne Derbyshire as a child. Big problems the city is facing with growth areas or sprawl to the rest of us. Good planning requires some real integrated sustainability if new developments are to be able to build good communities.
Christmas is coming up very fast still time to buy a copy of 'Only One Earth - the Long Road via Rio to Sustainable Development for all your friends and relations. It gives the forty year history of sustainable development and the challenges ahead.
